linux Gui basic

1. X vs Xfree86
X is the protocol, while Xfree86 is the implementation of the standard.
it’s now doing the same as Motif, Xorg do.

2. X vs X11R6
X11R6 means X Protocol version 11 Release 6

3.XServer vs Window Manager(Kde, Gnome, etc.)
WM is not part of XServer.

4.Gnome/Kde is not just a Window Manager.

5.global view
linux本身–>X服务器< -[通过X协议交谈]->窗口管理器(综合桌面环境)–>X应用程序.

6.VESA,VGA ,fbdev
these are different display card’s driver
